SUSTAINABLE ESSENTIALS FOR HOME AND ON THE GO

At this time in the world we all are wondering how to be most environmentally conservative. How to be sustainable. How to change the life aspects that have to do with our individual lifestyles. How to change the way we live.

If you have been a conscious person all through your life, I am sure you know it all. I am sure you have done it all.

But if you are waking up to the mess that we have made and trying to figure out what tiny steps you can take to bring about a change for good, then here are a few alternatives to the habitual way of life that degrade the natural environment. Yes, it is difficult to follow a zero waste life, but following the below tips, will at least take you one step closer to an eco-friendly world!

I have divided sustainable essentials for an individual in two main categories:

1. Sustainability at home

2. Sustainability on the go

As individuals, it is time that we all "Think beyond our everyday world, and experience the Universe as it really is and has become, in order to make the changes that are imperative to be made.”

SUSTAINABILITY AT HOME

Try to incorporate the following into your everyday lifestyle.

1.Bamboo/wooden toothbrush (Get rid of the plastic brushes now). As you change your brush every 3 months, imagine the amount of plastic that goes to the landfills.

2. Use a warm water flask for everyday work in the kitchen (saves energy every time you need warm water). Warm water and keep in a flask for as long as it stays.

3. Loose tea leads instead of tea bags ( yes no tea bags please. They seem easier to consume , especially in offices, but then the outer lining of most of them is not biodegradable)

4. Reuse glass jars for storing nuts, seeds, pulses etc. (Get rid of all the plastic used for storing food items)

5. Use led lights to save electricity and energy

3 TIPS ON FOOD PREP TO REDUCE WASTAGE

1. Soak lentils pulses ----Think ahead -----Think what you need and want to consume in advance

2 . Freeze vegetable scraps to make vegetable stock. Once you have freezed a considerable amount, make the stock and store in a glass jar. Compost the remaining scraps.

3. Take out all the last day leftovers from the fridge and get them to room temperature, before heating. This will save you energy.

SUSTAINABILITY ON THE GO

Keep the following items in your handbag at all times, whenever you step out of the house.

1. Small cotton bag

2. Own water bottle

3. Small muslin/cotton bags replacing one time use plastic bags

4. Napkin to be used instead of tissues

5. Own spoon and fork

It's a luxury to be able to feed ourselves well. Dont go far away from real ingredients that nourish our body and mind.

Living sustain-ably is so cost effective for all of us in so many different ways that the benefits of these will out-do any extra hard work you might feel you are doing by following the above.

Remember Small sustainable changes, little changes added together make a big difference.

In nature everything's connected. Everything has a connection - from humans to nature. Take baby steps (teach the same to your kids) and keep building on them. Soon you will notice how your life and the life of those around you has changed for good.

Sustainability is not a one size fits all concept. Based on your resources , make the changes in your lifestyle. And things will change! Because we are the change!
